Air Conditioner Repair – All About It

Air conditioners are one of the top home comfort systems that require ongoing maintenance and repair. Air conditioner repair can be complex, especially if you have never done it before. But to avoid the headaches and possible damage from doing something wrong, you should know what to expect and avoid. In most cases, replacing your AC is more expensive than repairing it. It can be tricky to determine until there are significant problems with your AC and you have lost significant time waiting for repairs.

Things You Should Know About Air Conditioner Repair
1. Keep the coils clean
Moisture from the air can often develop into mold if not removed regularly. That’s why keeping your air conditioner’s coils clean and dry is essential. Clogged coils will not be able to handle the amount of moisture being removed from the indoor environment, which can result in more work for your AC and higher energy bills. Clean your AC’s coils regularly and clean them before they become clogged.

2. Ventilation
Air conditioners need ventilation as it pulls air from within the room and put it outside. Ventilation keeps the indoor air from becoming too humid, which helps prevent mold or mildew growth. Ventilation is also essential to ensure the air is not too dry. Remember, it isn’t just about keeping the air in the room but also making sure that the air you pull outside is at a healthy temperature. If you live in another part of the house with a different temperature than your central air, make sure to have a double wall for your AC and install proper ventilation.

3. Timers
There are two types of AC timers, traditional and digital. Traditional timers have settings you must choose from, such as an “on” and “off” position. Digital timers allow you to set your AC to turn on before your timer goes off at a particular time of the day. For example, if you want your AC to start later in the afternoon than usual and others in the house wake up early, then you can program this into your digital timer so that it turns on early when it is still cool outside.

4. Location
Make sure to place your air conditioner in an area where it will not be in direct sunlight and close to the areas that need to be cooled. Also, keep in mind the ductwork is connected, and considering that the insulation will help guide the cooling breeze. You should also avoid placing your AC on carpeted surfaces as it can inhibit proper air circulation.

5. Filters
Air filters are critical in a working air conditioning system. Filters are typically constructed from a pleated or perforated type of paper and must be cleaned regularly to ensure proper operation.

6. Cooling cycles
The cooling cycle is what your air conditioner is set to run on once it starts up automatically. You must keep this in mind when troubleshooting your system, as most malfunctions will occur at the start because the unit has to get itself started up, which can be time-consuming for an ac unit.

AC Repair can be complex, and there are many things to consider, but the most important thing is to take your time and get everything checked by a professional air conditioning repair technician. In doing so, you will not only save money from making unnecessary repairs but also avoid the potential damage that can come from taking the wrong action.
